Why are liners important?
A stainless steel liner improves draft by sizing the liner to the appliance, creating hotter core temperatures, improved safety, easier cleaning and longevity.
Most houses on Long Island are around 30 years old. With older houses, the original chimney liner is made out of clay. After 30 years, the clay loses its glaze and it begins to chip and slate. The pieces of clay fall down to the base and eventually will plug up the gas or oil heating unit.
When this happens, this is considered a 'blockage' or 'puff back'. When we install a stainless steel liner, we bypass the clay lining system a foot into the basement and three inches out of the top of the old clay lining system to prevent any further blockages.
When you convert from oil to gas, it's a New York state law that you have to have a stainless steel liner in place. When you use gas to fuel your fireplace, the temperatures are much higher than the oil. The high temperatures of the gas against the cold clay causes condensation, leading to erosion inside the clay. When the clay erodes, it causes blockages in the fuel system.
